SUMMARY:Geoparser: Easily extract locations from your text
DESCRIPTION:If the course is fully booked and you want to be added to our waiting list\, email us (gis-hub@dsi.uzh.ch). \nGeographic information is embedded in a wide range of text documents\, from news articles and historical texts to social media posts\, often expressed through place names (toponyms). Extracting and accurately grounding these toponyms is essential for various research applications\, such as analysing the geographic contexts of historical narratives\, understanding spatial patterns of discourses in social media\, and exploring the geographic dimensions of literary works. Geoparsing is the task of automatically identifying and disambiguating these toponyms within texts and associating them with their correct geographical locations. \nIn this workshop\, participants will be introduced to Geoparser\, a Python library designed to efficiently geoparse large collections of text. The first part of the workshop will cover setting up Geoparser\, exploring its features\, and using it to extract and disambiguate toponyms in text documents. Through hands-on exercises\, attendees will learn how to apply Geoparser to their own data. \nThe second part of the workshop will focus on customising Geoparser for domain-specific text corpora. Participants will learn how to prepare training data\, fine-tune the model\, and evaluate its performance\, to improve the accuracy of geoparsing when working with texts from a specific domain. By the end of the workshop\, attendees will have a solid foundation for using Geoparser and adapting it to their projects. \nSchedule: The workshop starts at 9 am\, the room is open from 8.30 am. After a break in the middle\, the workshop continues until 12 pm. \nLecturer: Diego Gomes\, developer of Geoparser and Master student in Geography at UZH. \nWorkshop language: English \nTarget audience: Interested people from research\, teaching and the administrative (ATP*) staff as well as BA/MA/PhD students of UZH (*administratives und technisches Personal). Please note that registrations are limited to 15 people. \nPrerequisite: Bring your own device with a working internet connection. You should have 3.9 ≤ Python < 3.13 installed. \nVenue: Rämistrasse 69\, 8001 Zurich\, SOC-E-006 – Room “Schrödinger”. Please use the entrance at Schönberggasse as the entrance at Rämistrasse is not always open. \nCost: free \nContact: For questions contact Katia Soland (gis-hub@dsi.uzh.ch)

SUMMARY:Historische Daten mit einem GIS visualisieren und analysieren
DESCRIPTION:Mit Ross Purves und Katia Soland\, Universität Zürich.

SUMMARY:In search of spatial patterns (Spatial Statistics workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Description: This workshop teaches methods and concepts for the analysis of spatial data to a non-geographic audience. We dive into the first law of geography: “Everything is related to everything else\, but near things are more related than distant things.” \n \nWe show the implications of this law for the practical analysis of spatial phenomena and spatial statistics. Specifically\, we explain the concept of spatial autocorrelation and determine it in geographic data. We see why standard methods from inferential statistics can only be applied to a limited extent for highly autocorrelated data. Instead\, we learn about alternative methods that take into account the first law of geography. \nLecturer: Peter Ranacher\, Geographisches Institut \nDate\, time: 19 April 2023\, 9 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. \nLanguage: English \nRoom: DSI; SOC-E-006 (room “Schrödinger”) \nCost: free \nPrerequisites: You should have installed R and R Studio before coming to the course. \nRegistration deadline: extended to 18.4.2023 \nContact: For questions concerning the content of the course\, write to Peter Ranacher (peter.ranacher@uzh.ch)\, for questions related to administration contact Katia Soland (gis-hub@dsi.uzh.ch).

SUMMARY:From text to geodata to visualisation: Spatial data modelling with GIS
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop you will learn what spatial data is\, how it is structured and how to generate machine-readable data for GIS software from “classical” templates (e.g. text sources in the humanities). The workshop focuses on what needs to be considered in data modelling\, which formats exist and why a critical reflection of the work steps and a clear research question are crucial for an adequate use of the data. You will learn what to account for research data management and long-term archiving. \nIn a second part\, different visualization options for geodata are shown and applied on the basis of case studies. Additionally\, we discuss the field of application as well as advantages and disadvantages of the different visualizations. \nLecturer: Daniel Ursprung\, Historisches Seminar \nDate\, time: Friday\, 3rd February\, 10 am to 5 pm \nLanguage: English \nRoom: UZH Irchel Campus\, building Y25\, floor H\, room no. 86 (Y25-H-86) \nCost: none \nPrerequisites: Bring your own device with a working installation of QGIS Desktop (preferably newest version: 3.28\, no older than 3.22): https://www.qgis.org.
