SUMMARY:Historische Daten mit einem GIS visualisieren und analysieren
DESCRIPTION:Mit Ross Purves und Katia Soland\, Universität Zürich.

SUMMARY:Using GIS to tackle SDGs
DESCRIPTION:How can a company\, an NGO or an authority use ArcGIS tools to quantify\, monitor and keep track of its progress towards a sustainable development goal (SDG)? In this late afternoon event\, five speakers from five different perspectives show you how they use ArcGIS\, what challenges they face and what the outcome is. \nRoom: Y21-F-65 theatre hall (on Campus Irchel\, follow the signs to “Theatersaal”) \n \nThe event is a collaboration between the DSI GIS Hub at UZH and ESRI Switzerland. \nThe event is targeted to all people interested in using a GIS in their studies\, research or job. It is possible to attend only certain presentations – but please be on time. The event is free. For organisational reasons (room size\, food and drinks in the break\, …) however\, we kindly ask you to register (deadline 26.09.2023).

SUMMARY:In search of spatial patterns (Spatial Statistics workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Description: This workshop teaches methods and concepts for the analysis of spatial data to a non-geographic audience. We dive into the first law of geography: “Everything is related to everything else\, but near things are more related than distant things.” \n \nWe show the implications of this law for the practical analysis of spatial phenomena and spatial statistics. Specifically\, we explain the concept of spatial autocorrelation and determine it in geographic data. We see why standard methods from inferential statistics can only be applied to a limited extent for highly autocorrelated data. Instead\, we learn about alternative methods that take into account the first law of geography. \nLecturer: Peter Ranacher\, Geographisches Institut \nDate\, time: 19 April 2023\, 9 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. \nLanguage: English \nRoom: DSI; SOC-E-006 (room “Schrödinger”) \nCost: free \nPrerequisites: You should have installed R and R Studio before coming to the course. \nRegistration deadline: extended to 18.4.2023 \nContact: For questions concerning the content of the course\, write to Peter Ranacher (peter.ranacher@uzh.ch)\, for questions related to administration contact Katia Soland (gis-hub@dsi.uzh.ch).

SUMMARY:From text to geodata to visualisation: Spatial data modelling with GIS
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop you will learn what spatial data is\, how it is structured and how to generate machine-readable data for GIS software from “classical” templates (e.g. text sources in the humanities). The workshop focuses on what needs to be considered in data modelling\, which formats exist and why a critical reflection of the work steps and a clear research question are crucial for an adequate use of the data. You will learn what to account for research data management and long-term archiving. \nIn a second part\, different visualization options for geodata are shown and applied on the basis of case studies. Additionally\, we discuss the field of application as well as advantages and disadvantages of the different visualizations. \nLecturer: Daniel Ursprung\, Historisches Seminar \nDate\, time: Friday\, 3rd February\, 10 am to 5 pm \nLanguage: English \nRoom: UZH Irchel Campus\, building Y25\, floor H\, room no. 86 (Y25-H-86) \nCost: none \nPrerequisites: Bring your own device with a working installation of QGIS Desktop (preferably newest version: 3.28\, no older than 3.22): https://www.qgis.org. SUMMARY:Create convincing maps for your research and teaching
DESCRIPTION:The course is fully booked. If you wish to be put on the waiting list or if you want to be informed about upcoming similar events\, send an e-mail to gis-hub@dsi.uzh.ch. \nCreating maps and visualizing spatial data can be done quite easily today. The workshop shows how to create different kind of maps that can be used as illustrations for your research or conference papers or in lecture room for teaching. We will work with QGIS\, an OpenSource\, fully functional GIS software with sophisticated tools for map design. \nThe workshop will show how to create different kinds of maps and spatial visualizations for print and online use. It is designed for people with no or little prior experience in map making. If you bring your own ideas and projects\, we can build on this. The topics covered will follow the interests of the participants\, like creating topographic and thematic maps (e.g. choropleths\, heatmaps\, diagrams)\, map series (atlas function)\, data driven visualization\, symbolization and labelling as well as basic cartographic principles (colours\, projections etc.). \n*** Over lunch\, we will have our launch event for the GIS Hub\, including an aperitif! We look forward to toasting with you! ***  \nWorkshop language: English \nTarget audience: Research\, teaching and administrative (ATP*) staff as well as BA/MA/PhD students of UZH (*administratives und technisches Personal) \nPrerequisite: Bring your own device with a working installation of QGIS Desktop (preferably newest version: 3.28\, no older than 3.22): https://www.qgis.org. You do not need any previous knowledge of QGIS\, as the course is well suited for beginners.  \nVenue: Rämistrasse 69\, 8001 Zurich\, SOC-E-006 – Room “Schrödinger” \nRegistration deadline: 28 October 2022 \nContact: For questions concerning the content of the course\, write to Daniel Ursprung (daniel.ursprung@hist.uzh.ch)\, for questions related to administration contact Katia Soland (katia.soland@uzh.ch).
