Extracting and accurately grounding these toponyms is essential for various research applications, such as analysing the geographic contexts of historical narratives, understanding spatial patterns of discourses in social media, and exploring the geographic dimensions of literary works. Geoparsing is the task of automatically identifying and disambiguating these toponyms within texts and associating them with their correct geographical locations.<\/p>\n<p>In this workshop, participants will be introduced to <a href=\"https:\/\/pypi.org\/project\/geoparser\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Geoparser<\/em><\/a>, a Python library designed to efficiently geoparse large collections of text. The first part of the workshop will cover setting up <em>Geoparser<\/em>, exploring its features, and using it to extract and disambiguate toponyms in text documents. Through hands-on exercises, attendees will learn how to apply <em>Geoparser<\/em> to their own data.<\/p>\n<p>The second part of the workshop will focus on customising <em>Geoparser <\/em>for domain-specific text corpora. Participants will learn how to prepare training data, fine-tune the model, and evaluate its performance, to improve the accuracy of geoparsing when working with texts from a specific domain. By the end of the workshop, attendees will have a solid foundation for using <em>Geoparser<\/em> and adapting it to their projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Schedule:<\/strong> The workshop starts at 9 am, the room is open from 8.30 am. After a break in the middle, the workshop continues until 12 pm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lecturer:<\/strong> Diego Gomes, developer of <em>Geoparser <\/em>and Master student in Geography at UZH.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Workshop language:<\/strong> English<\/p>\n<p><strong>Target audience: <\/strong>Interested people from research, teaching and the administrative (ATP*) staff as well as BA\/MA\/PhD students of UZH (*administratives und technisches Personal).
